Mr. LeRoy Brown, 79 of Buckner, AR transitioned to perfect peace on September 26, 2016 at Christus St. Michael Hospital, Texarkana, TX. He was born to the late Odis and Pearlie Toney Brown.
LeRoy graduated high school from Lafayette County Training School in 1955. After graduation, he attended the University of Southern California (USC) his freshman year. Due to financial constraints, he returned to Arkansas and completed his education at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (formerly Arkansas Agriculture Mechanical and Normal College (AM&N), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in May 1961. In his quest for continuous knowledge and to further his career, he earned a Master of Science in Public School Administration from Texas A&M Commerce, (formerly East Texas State University) in Texarkana, TX in August 1981. He achieved a 30 year legacy as an outstanding Educator, Principal/High School Administrator in the Foster High School Districts in Lewisville, AR.
Upon retirement after 30 years as a public school educator, Leroy started his second career as a Funeral Home Director. He completed an apprenticeship at Smith Funeral Home in Stamps, AR and received a Funeral Home Director Certification. He was a loyal and dedicated employee of Smith Funeral Home for over 30 years.
LeRoy Brown was the first African American Mayor of the city of Buckner, AR. Under his leadership the city council successfully completed several projects to improve the city during his tenure such as receiving a grant for the new water system, building a city park and implementing the youth summer work program among others. He continued for several years as a city alderman after his tenure as Mayor.
LeRoy spent his entire life in service to his wife, family, church and community. He labored faithfully as a Senior Deacon at St. John Baptist Church in Buckner, AR. In addition, he was instrumental in acquiring the church building at the new location.
In 1960 LeRoy Brown and Dorothy Hughey Brown united in holy matrimony. He was the father of four children, Johnny Brown, and from the union of he and Dorothy, three children, Cininni, Titian and Ragatte.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, Odis and Pearlie Toney Brown; two adopted brothers, Timothy and Earl Halley.
His memory will be cherished by his daughter Cininni(Jewell) Powell of Arlington, TX; three sons Johnny (Rose) Brown and Ragatte Brown of Buckner, AR and Titian Brown of Belcamp, MD; one sibling, Luther(Dorothy) Jackson of Ogden, UT; grandchildren, Lance(Aerial)Brown, Texarkana, AR, Vance Brown of Buckner, AR, Lakethia Brown of Houston, TX, Shautina Bullock of Lt. Rock, AR, Kumaras and Kyran Powell of Arlington, TX, Krsna Powell of Silver Springs MD; one special great grand-daughter, Kumariya Powell of Arlington, TX. Moisha Moore of Magnolia, AR among other precious great grand-children, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives (special cousins Kerri and Anthony Sterling, Antegra, Kirsten, Bobbie Dismuke, Francille LaGrone, Mary B. Brown) and friends who loved him dearly.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Lewisville Elementary School Auditorium, Lewisville, AR with Rev. Charles Cooper officiating. Visitation will beheld at the St. John Baptist Church, Friday, September 30, 2016 from 5p.m. until 7p.m. Interment will be directly after the service at Buckner Community Cemetery on College Street/Shiloh Road Buckner, AR.
